Carbon Fiber Blank

Bolt Action - Carbon Fiber

Each PROOF Research carbon fiber barrel blank starts as a 416R stainless steel core, gets a carbon fiber wrap, and is then single point cut rifled and hand lapped, with PROOF reporting up to 64 percent less weight than a steel barrel of similar contour. Evolved Ballistics lists these bolt action carbon fiber barrels in Sendero, Sendero Light, and Bull contours. Carbon Fiber Blanks ship ready for a gunsmith to thread and chamber.  Carbon fiber drop-in barrels are the better route if you want a barrel already fitted to your action. PROOF's carbon contours can also run larger than factory barrels, so check your stock's barrel channel before you order.

Bolt Action Carbon Fiber Barrel FAQs

What is a carbon fiber barrel blank, and how is it different from a prefit?

A carbon fiber barrel blank is an unfinished barrel that PROOF ships ready for a gunsmith to thread and chamber, while a prefit arrives already threaded, chambered, and headspaced for one specific action. A blank makes sense when you want a gunsmith to set the chambering and finish for a custom build. A carbon fiber drop-in prefit is designed to be installed with a barrel nut or action wrench and headspace gauges, and a gunsmith can do the work if you prefer.

Which contour should I choose for a bolt action carbon fiber barrel?

Evolved Ballistics lists PROOF bolt action carbon fiber blanks in Sendero, Sendero Light, and Bull contours, and the main tradeoff is weight against stiffness. At equal lengths the Sendero weighs about 2.5 ounces more than the Sendero Light and is stiffer, which supports better precision, while the Bull is a full, straight profile. Evolved's barrel selection guide starts most builders on a Sendero and moves away from it only when your stock's barrel channel is tight, your cartridge is not a magnum, the barrel will be under 22 inches, or you want the lightest rifle possible.

How does PROOF Research make a carbon fiber barrel?

PROOF starts every carbon fiber barrel as a full-profile 416R stainless steel blank made in house, turns it down to a reduced profile, and wraps it in aerospace-grade carbon fiber impregnated with a proprietary resin. After the wrap cures, the barrel is finished to its final profile, single point cut rifled, hand lapped, and borescope inspected. PROOF says the carbon fibers spread heat along the barrel and through its wall, so the barrel cools faster.

Is a carbon fiber barrel better than a stainless steel barrel?

Neither wins for every rifle, because PROOF builds both from the same 416R stainless steel and the difference is the carbon wrap. PROOF reports up to 64 percent less weight than a steel barrel of similar contour and says the wrap helps the barrel shed heat, so the real question is how much your rifle's weight and barrel heat matter to the way you shoot it. If neither is a concern for your build, a stainless steel barrel blank uses the same core without the wrap.

Will a PROOF carbon fiber contour fit my rifle's stock?

It might not without some work. PROOF's carbon fiber contours can be significantly larger than factory barrels, so a stock inletted for a slimmer barrel may need a larger barrel channel or a replacement stock. If the barrel you are replacing is only slightly smaller than the contour you want, the channel can be opened up by you or a gunsmith. Building a new rifle? Confirm the stock is inletted for your chosen contour before you order.
