Unlike a barrel blank, which requires a gunsmith to finish, a prefit is designed to thread directly onto your action using a barrel nut wrench and a set of go/no-go headspace gauges. This allows most owners to swap barrels at home, making caliber changes and barrel replacements faster and more accessible.

Most prefit barrels are designed for owner installation. The typical process involves removing your existing barrel with an action wrench, threading the new prefit onto the action, and checking headspace with go/no-go gauges. You will need a barrel nut wrench sized for your action and a solid vise setup. While the process is straightforward for mechanically inclined owners, a gunsmith can handle the install if you prefer professional fitting.

Each prefit is machined to the specific thread pitch and headspace dimensions of its target action.

Both share the same match-grade 416R stainless steel bore with single-point cut rifling. The difference is the exterior: a carbon fiber prefit wraps the steel core in aerospace-grade carbon fiber, reducing barrel weight by up to 64% compared to a full-profile steel barrel. Carbon fiber also dissipates heat more effectively along the barrel's length, which can help maintain accuracy during extended shooting sessions. The tradeoff is a higher price point for the carbon fiber wrapping process.
